The effects of alcohol and drug abuse are vast and far-reaching. People’s addictions will completely take over their lives in ways they may not even see or realize. Their temperament will change; usually they will lose patience with others quickly. Addicts will become short with those they love, especially when the loved one is trying to help them overcome the addiction. They will become angry over little things that may not have bothered them before.
Household chores may cease being a priority. Homes will often take a backseat when the addict trying to track down the drug of choice. In this same way, personal hygiene will be ignored. The addict themselves, may be groomed less than when they were “clean” and sober. Often, the abuser will not notice that their teeth have not been brushed or their hair is not combed. Although, in their minds, they look the same as before their addiction problem. They do not notice the yellow skin and sunken features. The dank, limp hair appears to them the way it always did. Weight loss or gain in large amounts goes completely unchecked. It may take someone else pointing it out before the addict realizes that clothes do not fit the way they once did.
Neglect and inattention to detail are all too common effects of drug abuse. Unfortunately, this will often reach over into the area of parenting. The once fun, easy-going parent will become lethargic and apathetic. They will stop asking if homework is being done, then punish the child when the school calls to say that it is not. One day a friend may be allowed over for the weekend, the next the child is disappointed because plans have changed. Usually, the parent does not see the effects of drug abuse on the child, but the child’s demeanor will change.
Aside from the slovenly appearance, the messy house, and neglected children or other family members, drug abuse effects will usually carry over into the work place. The addict will show up late, if they show up at all. Previously good work ethics will slide. Work will suffer and deadlines will be missed. It will not be long before the addict is unemployed.
These are just some of the ways drugs and alcohol abuse takes a toll on the life of an addict and the lives of those around him or her.
